PWR now produce radiator cores with a new style tube ‘dimple’ at either ‘end’ of each tube. This dimple has a number of effects including stregthening the joint between the tube and header plate. This feature alone allows higher pressures to be used in the cooling system, thus further reducing the tendancy to boil.

Importantly, this specially placed dimple enhances turbulance at the ‘entry point’ of each tube. This creates a mixing effect that carries on through the length of each tube. This extra turbulance actually creates a ‘restriction’ further improving heat transfer in each PWR radiator as well as reducing any possible ‘hot spots’.
